About The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is the national competent authority responsible for food and consumer product safety, as well as animal and plant health, animal welfare, and environmental protection. As an independent public authority, NVWA ensures compliance with national and EU legislation through supervision, monitoring, enforcement, and crisis management. Working closely with regional and local authorities, scientific bodies, and European and international food safety networks, NVWA supports risk assessment, incident response, and the effective translation of food safety policy into practice to protect public health and consumer interests.

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority's role at DEFENSEFOOD

In DEFENSEFOOD, NVWA brings experience from frontline food safety oversight, contributing to risk assessment activities and helping to connect research and innovation with day-to-day food safety practice. By contributing expertise from official controls, incident response, and action against food fraud, NVWA supports the project’s goal of improving preparedness and strengthening the ability of authorities and the private sector to respond effectively to evolving food-related threats.
