Sciensano
About Sciensano
Sciensano is Belgium’s federal research institute for public and animal health, working at the interface of science, policy, and practice. Through a multidisciplinary “One Health” approach, Sciensano supports disease surveillance, food safety, risk assessment, and environmental health, combining expertise in laboratory science, data analysis, and reference services. Building on more than a century of scientific expertise, Sciensano contributes evidence-based knowledge to protect human and animal health and support health and crisis management authorities.
Sciensano's role at DEFENSEFOOD
Sciensano focuses on the detection, confirmation, and monitoring of chemical and biological food safety threats. In this role, Sciensano develops and applies advanced analytical methods, including genomics (metabarcoding) and mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), and works closely with partners of the DEFENSEFOOD project in order to complement broad screening approaches with precise confirmatory techniques. Its contribution strengthens the project’s analytical capacity and supports effective risk detection and response across the food chain.
